Do Bananas Grow on Trees?

Ravi believes his teacher made a mistake when he said bananas grow on banyan trees. Sam laughs at him and calls him a pillowhead, much to Ravi's annoyance.

The banana plant has a false trunk that grows about 3-6 m high. That’s as tall as an adult giraffe! These plants might look like trees but they’re actually related to lilies and orchids.

A large flower carrying many little yellowish flowers grow at the top of the false trunk. These flowers bend down and eventually become bunches of 50 to 150 fruits. The individual fruits are also known as fingers. And a row of bananas is made up of 14 to 20 fingers and called a hand.

The banana plant can bear fruit only once in its lifetime. So after its job is done, it is cut down to make room for a new banana plant.
