This World Autism Awareness Day, which is observed on 2 April annually, let’s become acquainted with this condition.

Autism is a condition caused by a child’s brain developing differently. This condition can affect children to varying degrees. No two kids with autism are the same. This is what makes it a spectrum condition, as in, there are several variations in the kind and severity of symptoms.

Children with autism might have trouble with:

  • Talking and learning word meanings
  • Making friends and fitting in
  • Handling changes in food, teachers, toys, etc
  • Handling loud noises, bright lights and crowds

However, this is not an exhaustive list. Some children may have more challenges and some fewer, while some others might have an entirely different set of developmental challenges.

That said, autism is not a disease or an illness. Autistic people are not unwell and don’t need to be cured. But autistic children can benefit from early treatment from professionals. Their treatment would help them deal with issues that may be interfering with their daily lives. This could include assistance with:

  • Talking
  • Learning
  • Playing
  • Making friends and getting along

If you have a friend with autism:

  • Be patient and kind. Remember that it’s challenging for them to understand the world.
  • Stick up for them and stand up to their bullies.
  • Ask adults to help protect your friend.

No one deserves to be bullied, and autistic children are no exception. They cannot help how their brains develop. They may not understand playful jokes and may not express emotions like you do. But they have feelings like all of us.
